On Saturday September 10th, 2016, Save Our Streets Brooklyn hosted our 5th Annual Lead By Example basketball tournament. The theme for this year’s tournament was the “Battle of the Brooklyn Neighborhoods- Safe Summer Edition.” Close to 200 people packed St. John’s park from all over Brooklyn to see who would come out on top.

The games began with Gangstas Making Astronomical Community Changes (G.M.A.C.C, East Flatbush) vs. Man Up Inc (East New York). G.M.A.C.C went on to win game one. In the second game, Operation Helping Our Own Develop (Operation H.O.O.D, Coney Island) faced off against S.O.S (Crown Heights). Operation H.O.O.D came out with the win. Operation H.O.O.D went on to win back to back games, beating Brownsville In Violence Out (BIVO, Brownsville), last year’s runners up, in the semi finals. G.M.A.C.C defeated last year’s champs, S.O.S (Bed Stuy) in the semi finals to face Operation H.O.O.D in the championship game.

Energy was high throughout the day as teams were eliminated. Operation H.O.O.D went on to win the championship trophy for Lead By Example 2016. All players walked away with medals, S.O.S. string bags, S.O.S. water bottles and S.O.S. hand towels for the day. All children in attendance left with backpacks and school supplies.

We’d like to extend a special thanks to everyone who came out for the day, especially Cure Violence Brooklyn, consisting of Man Up Inc, G.M.A.C.C Inc, Brownsville In Violence Out (BIVO), S.O.S. Brooklyn (Crown Heights x Bed Stuy) and Operation H.O.O.D (Helping Our Own Develop, Coney Island). Thank you to our referees, Nick and Roosevelt, who had their hands full as our officials. Thank you to our DJ, D Boy, who kept the spirit level high for this event. Thank you to Legal Aid for attending LBE 2016 and a very big thank you to St. John’s Parks and Recreation Center. This was our 5th year hosting this event in St. John’s Park and we are already looking forward to next year!
