On May 18, Neighbors in Action (NIA) celebrated the 9th annual Kingston Ave Fest. More than 500 community members came out to enjoy the festivities and there were tablers present from a number of local organizations including Modern MD Urgent Care, the UNI Project, Brooklyn Public Library, Miss K’s Dance, Seamen Society, and more. Children enjoyed the bounce house and inflatable basketball game, lines formed in from the popcorn and cotton candy machines, and an all ages dance off took place on the stage. Staff provided free meals from the grill, and passed out t-shirts with the message “YOU Matter” to community members who visited more than 8 tables and presented their fully stamped “passbook.” NIA youth participants worked the event as well, facepainting, leading games with children, and engaging community members in conversation about anti-violence themed artwork on display.

One community member who joined us in the festivities commented, “S.O.S. reaches out to the young people and community as a whole. They go above and beyond to accommodate [everyone].” Another shared, “I’ve been going to S.O.S events for a while and y’all never fail to disappoint.”

This was the first of 4 summer block parties that NIA will hold over the summer. On June 9th, we are celebrating a summer kick off in Bed-Stuy on Marcy from Lexington to Gates, then on August 18, Crown Heights will throw an annual Back to School block party. Finally, on September 7th, Bed-Stuy will host a Back to School block party as well. We hope to see you at one or more of these events! For details, visit our events page.
