The Crown Heights Community Mediation Center in partnership with the Sadie Nash Leadership Project have developed a 10-week internship program titled HER LIFE for young women of color residing in Brooklyn, specifically from Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant. The group will be meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM. Girls and young women participating in the program will receive stipend and graduate from the internship program on May 30th. The goal of HER LIFE is to empower young women to understand that their voices matter and know that they can be a positive influence in their communities.
The first workshop took place on Thursday, March 16th. This workshop served as a meet and greet, where interns met mediation center staff and each other through introductions, icebreakers, and discussions on societal issues they feel greatly affect them such as: bullying, teenage pregnancy, and unhealthy relationships. Overall, workshops will include topics such as community violence, internalized sexism, systemic oppression, leadership development, healthy relationships, and conflict resolution to name a few. Each week they will have the opportunity to meet with professional women of color in both traditional and non-traditional roles who will speak of their professions, paths to success, and obstacles they have faced along the way and how they have overcome them. Through this program, we are certain that our interns will be inspired and become agents of change in their communities. We are very excited for HER LIFE!
