On Monday November 23, we celebrated the launch of the new Legal Hand storefront in Crown Heights at 250 Kingston Avenue! Legal Hand will be staffed by trained volunteers and a supervising attorney who will provide legal information to community members.
The gathered audience of around 40 people listened to speeches by Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman, Senator Jesse Hamilton, Assemblymember Diana Richardson, Beth Goldman, Rabbi Eli Cohen, Regina Gardner, and Helaine Barnett. Judge Larry Marks introduced the speakers and they discussed the importance of programs like Legal Hand for closing the gaps in access to justice and legal services. Judge Lippman said that “distance can be a near insurmountable obstacle” for people seeking legal services and that “our goal is to break down the obstacles between communities and the legal system.” Regina Gardner, one of the dedicated Legal Hand volunteers, said that eight words she hears too often in her neighborhood are “I don’t know what I’m going to do.” She hopes that programs like Legal Hand can illuminate next steps for people in need of legal assistance.
