We are excited to continue to introduce the newest additions to the Crown Heights Community Mediation Center team, this time welcoming Gerina Davis, Ms. G, the Youth and Community Clinician. Get to know Ms. G through the interview below, courtesy of Giselle, one of our stellar YO S.O.S. Youth Interns.

What’s your name and position at the Mediation Center?

My name is Gerina, aka Ms. G, aka First Lady (chuckles) and I am the new Youth and Community Clinician for the Crown Heights Community Mediation Center.

Tell us a little about yourself? Where are you from? What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I am a Brooklyn native, raised in Fort Greene/Clinton Hills. My hobbies involve eating, hiking, traveling, spending time with friends, horseback riding, eating, the performing arts (watching plays), reading, dancing, cooking and did I mention eating (laughs)?

How long have you been working with youth and why did you choose to work with youth?

I have been working with youth for the past 7 years. Within the last two years, I worked as a program director, and missed working with youth directly. I saw there was a need for mental and emotional therapists of color that are have experience working with youth of color and decided to revisit my background in therapy.

What have you learned during your time working with youth?

(Deep inhale and exhale) Working with youth has taught me a lot! I’ve learned the importance of being present in the moment and that in order to create a space where youth feel comfortable and safe, it is important that I am comfortable and create a safe space around me. There is a beautiful healing power in vulnerability and watching youth come to a place where they are vulnerable holds me accountable to be that way as well.

What is a meaningful piece of advice someone’s given you?

A meaningful piece of advice is that you shouldn’t expect something from others that you don’t expect from yourself.

If you had one superpower, what would it be?

(smiles and kicks legs) Hmmmm I can’t choose between super speed and mind reading.

Super Speed- I would like the ability to be fast because I suffer from over committing and I end up being late for my plans that are scheduled back to back. Therefore with super speed, I will be able to get to each commitment on time with time to spare.

Mind Reading- I would only utilize this power when I feel that something is wrong with someone and they are not wanting to express it. With reading their mind, I can strategize how to support them without them having to disclose. Oh and maybe to use on a future boo… j/k.
