On Thursday, November 12th, 2015, the Save Our Streets Crown Heights Program Manager, David Gaskin, escorted an S.O.S participant to the Department of Justice (DOJ) Coordinating Council Meeting in Washington, D.C. The participant presented at the Council Meeting on his life before S.O.S., how he became involved with S.O.S., and his plans for the future. He was included on the panel along with Attorney General Loretta Lynch and many others. One moment that stood out was when AG Loretta Lynch asked him to speak about the public education materials S.O.S. uses to reach out to high risk individuals. Without breaking his train of thought or conversation, he subtly reached into his suit pocket and presented AG Loretta Lynch with an anti-gun violence palm card. Not only was he able to hold the attention of those in attendance, many reported afterwards that hearing his story and how serious he is about changing his life was the “highlight” of the day.
Traveling for this event was the first time that the S.O.S participant traveled outside of New York. He was extremely excited about the opportunity to explore a new city and to share the importance of S.O.S. in his life.
