lavonToday we are remembering Lavon “Boo” Walker, founding member of Save Our Streets and beloved father, husband, friend, community member and youth minister. Lavon dedicated his life to working for peace and uplifting communities. Tragically, Lavon was shot and killed in Miami on Sunday morning.
Since 2010 Lavon was out on the streets of his beloved Crown Heights working to end gun violence and participating in street interventions and mediations. To us in the office, he was our heart. He was always smiling, cracking jokes and keeping us honest. He saw the vision for a violence-free Brooklyn.

In an article in the Miami New Times, Project Director Amy Ellenbogen is quoted saying, “To those who knew him, Walker was the type of guy who would risk his own life to save another person…We are all so much more deeply committed to ending gun violence in his name, and we hope others will do the same. All of us are optimists that the plague of gun violence will come to an end, but situations like this are really heartbreaking.”

We send our condolences to his family and loved ones and will miss him forever.
We will continue to do this work in his name.

Tonight, we will gather for a candlelight vigil in his honor. Everyone is invited to join us at 7pm in front of 256 Kingston Ave. We are also collecting online donations to support his family and the education of his two sons, Lavon Jr. and Matthew. Please donate here.
