Legal Hand is a new program of the Mediation Center that provides free legal information and referrals to people in Crown Heights through our walk-in center at 250 Kingston Avenue. Aside from three full-time employees, Legal Hand is staffed entirely by volunteers who commit to working one 3 hour shift per week for a 6 month cycle. On March 21 and March 28 we held trainings for our second cycle of Legal Hand Volunteers! Over 30 volunteers gathered at the Brooklyn Public Library to learn about client interviewing skills, housing advocacy, family law, public benefits and more.
So far, Legal Hand has assisted over 1,000 visitors between the Crown Heights, Brownsville, and Jamaica Queens sites. We are so appreciative of the volunteers who have already given their time and energy to make this possible, and we are excited to see all of the wonderful work our volunteers will continue to do this cycle!
As always, we had tremendous support from our legal services providers: Queens Legal Services, NYLAG, and Legal Aid Society. A huge thank you goes out to Erika McSwain, Jonathan Smith, Latoya LeGrand, Jennie Kim, Marlies Talay, Jett Bachman, Ivia Cardozo, Sirrah Harris, Sunny Noh, Liliana Vaamonde, and Michael Diller for recruiting the volunteers and making this training a success. Also thank you to the staff at the Brooklyn Public Library for letting us use their space for these trainings!
