On April 15th, S.O.S. celebrated Global Youth Service Day with 30 students from the High School for Public Service. The students joined us in our office for a training led by Lisa Jones and Derick Scott on the S.O.S. model and on canvassing. Afterward, we split into teams and went door-to-door throughout east Crown Heights, asking business owners to hang an S.O.S. poster in their windows. Many students were surprised by how well they were received; they found store owners to be mostly friendly and willing to help, even allowing students to put up additional posters when the store already had one. All in all, we reached out to 130 stores in Crown Heights! Ninth-grade advisor and GYSD chaperone JoeAnne Pfeil said, “The students felt empowered, proud, and excited about the work they did today, as did the chaperones!”
In the afternoon, students worked on their own slogans and posters for nonviolence. Check out some of these great designs:

We were so glad to host these motivated young people and to all learn from each other. If you’re a teacher and want your students to be involved with S.O.S., give the Mediation Center a call at 718-773-6886.
