On the night of Monday, April 8th, 2019, two men were non-fatally shot only two doors down from the S.O.S. Bed-Stuy office, at the corner of Gates and Nostrand. It certainly hit close to home, in more ways than one. The Bed-Stuy team gathered to hold a shooting response at the site of the incident two days later on April 10th.
Attendees carried posters and handed out public education materials with anti-gun violence messages, spoke through the bullhorn, and gathered in swag with the “stop shooting, start living” motto. Together, the street team, clergy, Neighbors in Action staff, BIVO, G.M.A.C.C., Moms Demand Action, and community members took a stand against the pain and harm caused by the shooting. S.O.S. Bed-Stuy showed that the community does not need or want gun violence, and asked those passing by and those outside to reconsider what’s “normal”—that gun violence isn’t normal, and that it shouldn’t be tolerated.
The team would like to thank all 38 attendees who gathered at the shooting responses and helped spread the message: #stopshootingstartliving.
